Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Style
High Quality Replica Mies Van Der Rohe Furniture
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe was one of the pioneering names in the world of architecture and design. He gave to modernism the new definition of innovativeness and to the world of aesthetics – minimalism. Born in 1886 in Aachen, Germany, Mies grew up in a family of stonemasons which gave him an early appreciation for structure and form.
His professional career began to develop when he moved to Berlin in 1905 and worked in the office of Peter Behrens, one of the most influential architects of the time. Here, Mies was exposed to the innovative ideas of the avant-garde and modernist movements which saw a shift in his work which led to him designing one of the first glass skyscrapers well ahead of its time in 1922.
The 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona was a pivotal event for Mies Van Der Rohe. As the architect of the German Pavilion, he had the opportunity to showcase the building along with his Barcelona Chairs which were designed specifically to complement the Pavilion.
Mies, along with his collaborator Lilly Reich, designed the chairs to serve as seating for the Spanish royalty and drew inspiration from the curule, a type of folding stool used by Roman aristocracy. It was only recent advances in manufacturing techniques at the time that allowed Mies to achieve the Barcelona chair’s distinctive and detailed design from the curvature of the stainless steel frame to the precise tufting of the leather cushions – this was revolutionary at the time.
Receiving widespread acclaim for their innovative design, the Barcelona chairs quickly became an icon of modernist design. The successful launch of the Barcelona chair was proof of the progressive ideals during that era.
In 1930 Mies Van Der Rohe became a prominent figure in the ‘International Style’ movement which sought to create a universal design language based on modernist principles. The movement emphasised functionalism, simplicity, and the use of modern materials. The International Style had a global impact, shaping the development of modern architecture and design. Mies’s work, including the Barcelona Chair, contributed to the spread of these ideas worldwide. other proponents of this style are Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Their collective work laid the foundation for modernist design.
Mies Van Der Roh’s work is still relevant today, especially the Barcelona Chair which has remained in contemporary residential spaces internationally for almost 100 years as well as showcasing across pop culture throughout history from films (The Devil Wears Prada, 2006) and television shows (Mad Men, 2007) to high-end fashion magazines. Its presence in these mediums symbolises sophistication and modernity.
The chair’s innovative use of materials and minimalist design have inspired generations of designers. Its principles of simplicity and functionality continue to influence modern furniture design leaving behind a lasting legacy.
