Premium Quality Furniture in the Style of Michel Ducaroy
Michel Ducaroy, born on November 4th, 1925, in Lyon, France, was a visionary French designer who left an indelible mark on the world of furniture design. Raised in a family deeply entrenched in the realm of design and craftsmanship, Ducaroy’s upbringing fostered a profound appreciation for innovation and creativity.
Ducaroy’s journey into the world of design began with his formal education in sculpture at the École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux Arts de Lyon. This academic foundation provided him with the artistic prowess and technical skills that would later define his distinctive design aesthetic.
In 1952, Ducaroy embarked on his professional journey by launching his own design studio. However, it was his collaboration with the Roset family, beginning in 1954, that would catapult him to prominence in the world of furniture design. Joining forces with Ligne Roset, located in the Ain region of France, Ducaroy pioneered the use of cutting-edge synthetic materials such as foam, thermoformed plastics, and quilted textiles in his designs.
Ducaroy’s crowning achievement came in 1973 with the creation of his most famous and enduring design: the legendary Togo sofa. Inspired by the simple yet ingenious concept of a ‘toothpaste tube folded over itself’, the Togo sofa revolutionised the concept of comfort and relaxation. Featuring a structure-less, foam-filled body, the Togo sofa personifies Ducaroy’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of conventional design.
Launched at the prestigious Salon des Arts Ménagers in Paris, the Togo sofa captured the imagination of design enthusiasts worldwide and cemented Ducaroy’s legacy as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Over the years, the Togo sofa has achieved cult status and remains in production today.
Ducaroy retired from active design work in the 1980s but continued to be revered as a visionary figure in the world of furniture design until his passing in 2009.
Michel Ducaroy’s contributions to the world of furniture design are nothing short of extraordinary. From his early collaborations with the Roset family to the creation of iconic pieces such as the Togo sofa, Michel Ducaroy is still considered one of the most important designers of the 20th century.
